Tour of Remodeled Homes Remodelers

The 24th Annual Tour of Remodeled Homes, presented by the Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines, was recently held with ten unique homes on display by nine of the best remodelers in the area. This scattered site, self-guided tour is a perfect opportunity for attendees to talk to remodelers directly and see their best work.

Home #1: Remodeling Contractors

This meticulous remodel begins with a stunning kitchen transformation, boasting the transitional styling and modern functionality of our signature Cornerstone Cabinetry. Adorned by thickened edge countertops and an exquisite marble backsplash, while state-of-the-art appliances make culinary dreams a reality. The ambiance extends to the living room, where a linear fireplace, cloaked in pristine white stack stone, serves as the focal point, radiating warmth and sophistication. Impeccable accents throughout add depth and character, creating a seamless transition between spaces. Complimenting this newly renovated home are the exquisite furnishings curated by JY Design.

Home #2: Whitey Exteriors / Whitey Remodeling and Interiors

This Johnston home has a nice, spacious layout but lacked the overall presentation that it truly deserved. The homeowner’s main priority for the remodeling was the kitchen and main floor updates. Our team got right to work and helped design a new functional kitchen with a large island. Bathrooms were reshaped, the laundry room was redone, and updates were made to all the flooring and trim. One of the main features is the use of white oak throughout—from stair parts to beams to shelves, the white oak makes this project stand out. Fireplaces up and downstairs had stone added, giving this home a warm, cozy feel all around.

Home #3: Design2Build

This home has been transformed from a dated, dark space into a bright, modern sanctuary. The once heavy stone fireplace has been replaced with sleek, soft black tile creating a contemporary focal point. The kitchen has been reimagined with new cabinets, island and state-of-the-art appliances. An old closet is now a breakfast cubby for coffee and toast. Updated lighting throughout the home brightens every room. The former dining room is now an elegant entertaining area. The primary bath has been revamped with new finishes and a striking accent wall. Every element of the remodel creates a cohesive, stylish and functional living space.

Home #4: Woodharbor Kitchen Bath & Home

This lower-level build-out consists of a bar, lounge and guest quarters adjacent to an in-ground pool. There is a traditional bar and backbar reminiscent of an Irish pub, and areas for darts, cards and tabletop games. A popcorn/candy display highlights a home theater entrance. A generous private guestroom and full bath are nearby. Warm wood, brick and wainscoting, as well as unique accent lighting throughout the lower level, create an intimate space. Mosaic floor tiles and an interesting tin ceiling brightens the bar, and a large wood coffered ceiling enriches the lounge and gaming areas. The space evokes family, friendship and fun for all ages.

Home #5: Compelling Homes

When we first walked in the front door of this home, we knew it was special. The layout, the volume, the “feel and bones” were, and are special, but the finish elements fell short of the needs of the homeowner. This home received a massive makeover as the entire main floor was massaged and realigned with the sophisticated nature of the Visionary Maven who calls this dwelling home. We were given carte blanche to reconcile the kitchen, living room, hearth room, powder, primary suite, dressing room and laundry room, to create a space that’s comfortable, yet sharp. An intriguing aspect is we removed minuscule amounts of interior framing that had a massive impact on the furniture layout.

Home #6: Silent Rivers Design+Build

To reflect the style of its new homeowners, this cramped area now exudes spaciousness. Removing the dining room wall allowed for a seamless flow between spaces. The focal point of the redesign is the uninterrupted island, offering ample workspace and seating. A touch of bespoke charm was added with a custom plate rack. A dedicated baking center was integrated into the layout and a towering pantry cabinet transformed an overlooked corner into spacious storage. Architectural adjustments like the new doorway transom and widened sunroom opening, were strategically arranged to enhance the visual connectivity from the front of the house to the backyard.

Home #7: Silent Rivers Design+Build

Our client requested an update to their white 90’s kitchen on a tight budget, wanting a bold aesthetic and improved functionality. Maintaining the basic floor plan, we relocated the range to open the island for prep and for entertaining. We also increased storage by adding a shallow walk-in pantry featuring walnut doors, open shelves and decorative shelf brackets. Black walls and cabinets highlight the champagne bronze hardware and white paradise granite countertops. The contrasting white cabinetry on the island and the walnut accents, finish the look. Other unique features include a small drop zone and hall tree at the entrance.

Home #8: Grand Homes & Renovation

This project started as a kitchen renovation, needing to remove the wall that separates the beautiful dining room and kitchen. The 90’s kitchen was the first to be removed, then we were able to remove the major wall and use a large beam to expand the opening allowing for better flow. Continuing to match the existing millwork, we re-built part of the large wainscot wall adding a matching trimmed arch on the other opening. The oak floor was then matched, and new flooring was added. Quartzite tops and custom painted cabinets with a walnut island completed this timeless and unique transition.

A spacious, state-of-the-art kitchen becomes the heart of the home, boasting top-tier appliances and a stylish central island. Upstairs, the bathroom undergoes a luxurious makeover with fun accent tile, a clawfoot tub and smart storage solutions that combine elegance with practicality. The exterior undergoes a dramatic facelift, including a new front porch, fresh landscaping and a mixture of new cedar shakes and LP siding. The modern garage addition contrasts with the traditional Dutch Colonial house, offering a distinct aesthetic.

This is a comprehensive exterior renovation and four-seasons addition, modernizing a traditional farmhouse/craftsman home.
